Moore was born on January 24, 1971 in Detroit, Michigan to adolescent parents Ronald Grant and Patricia Moore. After she was born, Kenya was sent to live with her grandmother. She began modeling at the age of 14 being around the cover of the January 1992 issue of Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Company’s Ebony Man’s (EM) magazine. She also became a model for the Ebony Fashion Fair aesthetic line. At 22, Kenya Moore won Miss Michigan USA (1993) and then became the second African American woman to win Miss USA. She then represented America in the Miss Universe 1993 pageant, which she placed sixth in. Moore was credited as producer/director of the movie Haitian Nights, after the project lost its director for unspecified reasons, Moore took over the creation and completed the movie. When the picture did not locate distribution, Moore founded Moore Vision Media, an independent picture production and home-video distribution company.
