Stefan Kahil Lessard was born in Anaheim, California in June 1974. His parents were both musicians and also the family settled in Virginia in 1987. He studied music under trumpeter John D’earth in the Tandem Friends School in Charlottesville. D’earth put in a recommendation for Lessard to Dave Matthews who was looking for a bass player. D’earth recommended Lessard to Dave Matthews for inclusion in his new group, which was looking for a bassist. On account of his age, he sometimes had to sneak in the back door of the nightclubs where the band was playing. Lessard finished his junior year of high school before dropping out in favor of a music career, and was taken at Richmond’s Virginia Commonwealth University in its jazz studies program. He left after six weeks, when it became apparent that he couldn’t keep up with school work while continuing with all the band. In 2006, Lessard started keeping a MySpace page called LowenDude. He also possesses and maintains a website at izstyle.com. During the 2007 European Tour, Lessard also started a video blog on YouTube. After that year, he co-wrote the original music for Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk.
