Alex Van Halen wiki & biography:

Alex Van Halen is a Dutch-born American drummer as well as the cofounder of the hard rock band Van Halen. Born in the Netherlands on May 8, 1953, his current estimated net worth is $75 million. He formed this world-famed band in 1974 with his brother, Eddie, and with David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony. Alex Van Halen and his band have remained nearly always successful since then. The group has sold more than 80 million albums globally, has had the most Number One Hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart and, in the 1980s, had more Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other hard rock band. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) named Van Halen the 19th Best Selling group/musician ever. Van Halen is one of just five bands to have two albums sell more than 10 million copies and, in 2008, was listed as one of the very best-paid live acts in the world. Alex Van Halen is also an ordained minister.
Alexander Arthur “Alex” Van Halen (created May 8, 1953) is a Dutch-born American musician, best known as the drummer and cofounder of the hard rock group Van Halen.

In 1974, the Van Halen brothers, David Lee Roth, and Michael Anthony formed a group, just called Van Halen. They were signed to Warner Brothers in 1977 and released their very first record in 1978. The two brothers will be the only members of Van Halen who’ve been in the group for the entire duration.

Alex had several early groups with Eddie before Van Halen came to be. Names of those previous groups include The Broken Combs, The Space Brothers & Mammoth Chammoth. The band let David Lee Roth’s PA system because of their shows. Shortly after, Edward became tired of singing lead vocals, and determined to have Roth join the band, as it was also much more affordable. Roth has asserted that it was his idea to rename the group Van Halen, and that he actually named it after Alex. Along with his musical responsibilities only at that time, Al was busy handling managerial responsibilities, like booking gigs, etc. for the band. Their 1978 album Van Halen was released to much fanfare, influencing many musicians in hard rock. Despite the truth that the term “brown sound” is usually associated with Eddie’s guitar, Alex originated the expression to refer to the sound of his snare drum. At live shows, Alex is well known for being an entertainer, performing competitive drum solos and stage pyrotechnics. The only real non–Van Halen example of Alex’s musicianship can be found on the soundtrack to the film Twister. The instrumental “Respect the Wind” (for which the Van Halen brothers were nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance) features Alex on keyboards (with Eddie on guitar). The tune was used for the movie soundtrack Twister and plays during the ending credits of the movie.
