After growing up in Hawaii, Penn became interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when a neighbor opened up a fitness center and began training him. Shortly thereafter, Penn chose to move to San Jose, California to begin training full time. Only weeks later he became the very first non-Brazilian to win the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Brazil.

His success and stature in martial arts eventually led him to join mixed-martial arts which was beginning to have widespread popularity in the United States in 2001. Penn debuted in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) occasion in 2001 having a triumph and had early success before losing a decision in his first championship fight. In 2003 Penn would win his first tournament as a lightweight division in K 1. Penn would win his first UFC crown at UFC 46 in the welterweight division, in among the largest upset in the history when he beat Matt Hughes.

After losing a rematch with St. Pierre he’d return as lightweight champions in 2009 and continued to fight until 2011 when he declared his retirement. Penn has coached on two episodes of The Ultimate Fighter television show and wrote an autobiography. He’s widely regarded among the greatest MMA fighters in history. Penn has two daughters with longtime girlfriend Shealen Uaiwa.
