Denver started studying architecture at Texas Tech University before dropping out to pursue a job as a folk music singer. By the late ’60s, the folk quit playing with bands and attempted a solo career. He made his RCA debut with “Rhymes & Reasons”, which charted at number 148 in the U.S. and number 21 in the U.K. Denver released two more records in 1970 before his 1971 record “Poems, Prayers & Promises”, rose to number 15 in the U.S. and went platinum. Denver’s 1972 effort, “Rocky Mountain High”, went double platinum in the United States, breaking into the top five to the Billboard charts, and his 1974 album, “Back Home Again”, was certified triple platinum after maintaining the top position in both America and Canada. His next album, “Windsong”, also topped the charts. The mid-’70s were Denver’s most successful period as a solo artist, and he was among the best selling artists of the decade. He experienced a dozen number one singles during his profession. Denver won a 1975 Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for his program “An Evening With Jon Denver”. The two time Grammy Award winner was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1996. Grammy Award took up numerous political and humanitarian causes, including support for the Democratic Party and people struggling with AIDS. His own charity, the Windstar Foundation, was created in 1976 in an effort to support sustainable living practices. Denver, an enthusiastic pilot, was killed when his airplane went down in the Pacific Ocean on October 12, 1997. Denver became the first individual to ever be inducted to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2011, more than a decade after his passing.
