Syl Johnson got his worth from a lifelong musical profession creating a string of hits in the 1960s and 1970s. Before being a solo artist, Mississippi-born Johnson sang with blues heavyweights including Magic Sam (who was a neighbour when Johnson and his family moved to Chicago), Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and Howlin’ Wolf. Very quickly, Johnson created hits, Come On Stock it to Me (1967), Different Strokes (1967) and Because I’m Black (which peaked at number 11 on the R&B Billboard graph in 1969). At the start of the 1970s, Johnson switched to Hi Records and continued to churn out hits, We Did It and Back for the Taste of your Love. His biggest hit, Take Me to the River, peaked at number 7 on the R&B chart in 1975. His last hit was Ms Fine Brown Frame in 1982. Since that time, Johnson has started a fast food restaurant too as making occasional appearances at blues gigs.
